Periodontics is the dental specialty dedicated to the care of the periodontal tissues (gums and bone) at every stage of life. The disease periodontists treat most often is periodontitis, or gum disease, which affects teens and adults.
The specialty is not limited to treating periodontal disease. We also perform:
- Gum grafts
- Esthetic gum contouring
- Crown lengthening
- Bone regeneration therapy
- Corticotomies (to speed up orthodontics in adults)
- Dental implants
- Management of tooth sensitivity, oral lesions and oral pathology
Always at the forefront, with state-of-the-art techniques
Our team always performs a thorough, detailed evaluation to make an accurate diagnosis and provide the right care.
Stages of gum disease
- Gingivitis: the earliest stage. Gums become red, swollen and may bleed, usually without pain. Its main cause is plaque buildup from insufficient hygiene. With professional care and good habits at home, it is reversible.
- Periodontitis: if gingivitis is not treated, the infection advances toward the root and the bone that supports the tooth. Gums recede and, without treatment, teeth can be lost.
If your gums are swollen or bleeding, we recommend visiting us as soon as possible: the earlier it is treated, the simpler the treatment.
Treatments
- Scaling and root planing: a non-surgical procedure that removes plaque and tartar below the gumline, where a toothbrush can't reach, and smooths the roots so the gums can heal. It may leave some temporary sensitivity.
- Pocket reduction surgery: in more advanced cases, tartar and bacteria are removed from deep pockets to control the infection and allow bone and gums to recover.
After treatment, brushing twice a day and flossing daily help maintain the results.
AirFlow® cleaning
We use AirFlow® technology for professional cleanings and periodontal maintenance. Instead of scraping the teeth, it combines air, water and a very fine powder to remove bacterial plaque (biofilm) and stains, even between teeth, around implants and braces, and in shallow periodontal pockets.
- More comfortable: no heavy scraping and less sensitivity than a traditional cleaning.
- Gentle on gums: protects enamel, gums and restorations.
- More thorough: reaches hard-to-reach areas where brushes and hand instruments can't.
- Ideal for maintenance: helps preserve the results of gum treatment and care for implants.
“My gum problem was solved quickly and without discomfort.”
