Two joints (one on each side) and several muscles are responsible for opening and closing the mouth, working together so you can chew, speak and swallow. The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the human body: it is made up of bones, the articular disc and several muscles and ligaments. Any problem in this system can cause severe pain and discomfort.
Most common symptoms
- Jaw pain when opening or closing the mouth
- Difficulty chewing
- Clicking or popping when moving the jaw
- Ear pain or ringing in the ears
- Facial, head and neck pain
They can appear suddenly or gradually, on one or both sides of the face. The good news is that TMJ pain is very treatable.
How is it diagnosed?
We perform a complete evaluation: medical and dental history, head and neck exam, analysis of the bite and the joint's range of motion, and any imaging studies needed.
Diagnosis with our own imaging
We are one of the few dental specialty practices in Mexico with our own X-ray equipment for tomography of the temporomandibular joint. This allows a high level of diagnosis for problems such as arthritis of the joint and disc displacement.
Muscle relaxation and jaw deprogramming
We have been treating patients with this kind of problem for over 30 years. Our techniques combine therapeutic laser, muscle relaxants and occlusal splints, among others, carefully adjusted to each patient's specific problem.
“I thought my joint problems would bother me for the rest of my life. Thanks to Dr. Carrillo, the pain is gone.”
